ABOUT

LISTEN

Violinist Alexi Kenney's album Shifting Ground weaves together seminal works for solo violin by J.S. Bach with a collection of pieces from the 17th century to the present day, placing them in vibrant conversation. Premiere recordings of works by Matthew Burtner, Salina Fisher, and Angélica Negrón, some with electronic soundscapes, flow between Alexi's personal arrangements of Schumann and Joni Mitchell, as well as pieces by Eve Beglarian and Nicola Matteis. Shifting Ground is designed to be listened to as a set, traversing surreal dreamscapes, fiery virtuosity, spiritual beauty, and finally culminating in Bach's grand elegiac masterpiece, the Chaconne.

ABOUT ALEXI KENNEY

Violinist Alexi Kenney is forging a career that defies categorization, following his interests, intuition, and heart. He is equally at home creating experimental multi-media programs and commissioning new works, soloing with major orchestras including those of Cleveland, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Dallas, and Detroit, and collaborating with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time. The recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, he is a founding member of the visionary inverted quartet Owls, hailed as a "dream group" by the New York Times. Born in Palo Alto, California, Alexi is a graduate of the New England Conservatory, where he studied with Miriam Fried and Donald Weilerstein. Outside of music, Alexi enjoys searching for great food and coffee, baking for friends, and walking for miles on end in whichever city he finds himself, listening to podcasts and Bach on repeat. www.alexikenney.com
