The live cast recording from LA Opera's production of Kamala Sankaram’s acclaimed opera Thumbprint tells the story of Mukhtar Mai, a young Pakistani woman who overcame incredible odds to seek justice. A first of its kind, the score melds the South Asian systems of raga and tala, the sounds of qawwali and Bollywood, and the structures and vocal fireworks of Western opera. This sold-out run was the final production where Kamala Sankaram also sang the role of Mukhtar, praised by the LA Times as “a rousing double threat, a compelling singer… You don’t leave the theater unimpressed or unmoved.”
